The College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Moor Plantation, Apata, Ibadan, Oyo State, recently hosted a three-day refresher training programme for Veterinary Paraprofessionals (VPPs) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The training forms part of the FAO-supported Empowering VPP Entrepreneurs project, designed to strengthen animal health service delivery across Nigeria.

The programme focused on enhancing the technical competence and entrepreneurship skills of Veterinary Paraprofessionals who provide essential primary animal health services to livestock farmers, particularly smallholder farmers in rural communities. Key areas covered include early disease detection, clinical care, vaccination, disease surveillance and reporting, biosecurity, hygiene, and good livestock management practices.
During the programme, FAO representatives interacted with participants and highlighted the critical role of VPPs in advancing animal health, livestock productivity, animal welfare, public health, and One Health objectives. By strengthening the animal health workforce, the initiative contributes to reducing the impact of animal diseases on livelihoods, trade, and food security in Nigeria.

As part of the visit, the FAO delegation toured the college’s teaching, research, and demonstration farms, where they observed ongoing livestock development activities, including the cross-breeding of N’Dama cattle, a trypanotolerant indigenous breed of West Africa. The visit showcased the college’s capacity for hands-on training, applied research, and sustainable animal production practices.
The College of Animal Health and Production Technology appreciates the FAO VPP project team for their commitment to building strong partnerships with local training institutions. The college reaffirms its dedication to supporting animal health training, veterinary paraprofessional development, and sustainable livestock production in Nigeria.
